The short answer

What is a WhatsApp broadcast?

A WhatsApp broadcast is one message sent to many contacts at once, where each person receives it in their own private chat rather than a group. Nobody sees who else got it, and every reply comes back to you privately. The free WhatsApp Business app limits how many contacts one list can hold; the Official WhatsApp Business API has no per-list cap.

  • The list caps out

A broadcast list in the free WhatsApp Business app holds a fixed maximum. Past it you are splitting the list by hand and sending the same message over and over.

  • Only saved numbers receive it

The free app delivers a broadcast only to people who have your number saved in their phone. Most customers never save it, so they never see the message.

  • No delivery reporting

Two grey ticks on your own screen is the whole report. Nothing tells you who read it, who replied, or which numbers failed.

The limit

What is the WhatsApp broadcast limit?

Two different limits get confused here. The free WhatsApp Business app caps how many contacts a single broadcast list holds. The Official WhatsApp Business API has no per-list cap. It has a messaging limit instead: how many unique customers you can start a conversation with in 24 hours, which rises automatically as your quality rating holds.

Use Cases

How real teams use Waplify for broadcasts

  • A digital marketing agency following up on a webinar

A digital agency uploads webinar leads, schedules a two-part sequence (replay plus offer), and tracks replies in one dashboard. Full send under 15 minutes.

  • An education institute announcing a new batch

A coaching institute imports students via CSV, maps {{1}} to First Name, and broadcasts a new-batch announcement. Meta's marketing rate is paid directly.

FAQ

WhatsApp broadcast questions, answered

The ones people ask before they ask about pricing.

1. What is a WhatsApp broadcast list?
A broadcast list is a saved group of contacts in the WhatsApp Business app that you can message all at once, with each person receiving it as a private chat. A list holds a limited number of contacts, and only people who have saved your number will actually receive the message. On the Official WhatsApp Business API the equivalent is a contact group or a filter, with neither of those two restrictions.
2. How many people can I send a WhatsApp broadcast to?
It depends which one you are using, and these are two separate limits. In the free WhatsApp Business app, one broadcast list holds a fixed maximum, so a bigger audience means building several lists and sending the same message repeatedly. On the Official WhatsApp Business API there is no per-list cap. What applies instead is your Meta messaging limit: how many unique customers you can start a conversation with in a rolling 24 hours, a tier that rises automatically while your quality rating stays healthy. Meta publishes the current figures and revises them periodically, so check Meta’s messaging limits documentation for today’s numbers.
3. What actually changes between the free app and the API?
Six things, and the contact cap is only the first of them.
Free Business appOfficial WhatsApp Business API
Contacts per broadcastFixed cap per listNo per-list cap. Governed by your Meta messaging tier
Must they save your number?YesNo
PersonalisationSame text for everyoneTemplate variables per contact
Delivery reportingTicks on your screenSent, delivered, read, replied, failed
SchedulingNoYes
Approved templatesNot requiredRequired for business-initiated messages
4. Should I use a broadcast or a group?
A broadcast when you want to reach people without them seeing each other. Everyone gets it privately, replies come only to you, and nobody can post to the whole list. A group when you want the conversation to be shared. Most business messaging wants a broadcast. The longer comparison is in our broadcast vs group guide.
5. Why did my WhatsApp broadcast not reach everyone?
On the free WhatsApp Business app, the usual reason is that the recipient has not saved your number. The app silently skips them, and nothing on your screen says so. On the Official WhatsApp Business API you get the actual reason per contact instead: delivered, read, or failed with the failure reason attached, visible in the campaign report.
6. Do I need approved templates and opt-in?
Yes to both, for any message your business starts. WhatsApp requires that outbound messages outside an open 24-hour conversation use a template Meta has reviewed, and it requires that the recipient opted in. Those two rules are what keep a number healthy, so they are worth treating as the feature rather than the hurdle. Waplify enforces both: campaigns send approved templates only, and opted-out contacts are excluded automatically. If you are stuck on what to write, we collected 15 broadcast message examples.
7. Will my WhatsApp number get banned if I broadcast with Waplify?
No. Waplify runs on the Official WhatsApp Business API, Meta's approved channel. The Business app gets banned because it is not built for high-volume sends. The rules that keep it that way are in our guide to sending bulk WhatsApp messages safely.
8. What does a WhatsApp broadcast cost?
Two separate bills. Meta charges per conversation at its own published rates, billed to you directly, and Waplify adds no markup on top of it. Waplify charges for the platform. See pricing for the plans, and note that every plan includes every feature: there are no tiers to upgrade through.
9. Can I automate follow-ups after a broadcast?
Yes. A broadcast is a single send. When you want a planned series instead, a drip sequence follows up on its own over days, and a chatbot flow can reply the moment someone answers. Both are covered on the WhatsApp automation page.
